Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 26) – Filipino football fans are in for a big treat as the Copa Paulino Alcantara 2022 kicks off next month.
The Philippines Football League (PFL) management announced its staging beginning March 14, and which will run up to the third week of May.
Elimination round games will be played every Monday and Thursday until May 12.
The top four clubs at the end of the single-round robin eliminations will qualify for the semifinals set on May 16. The battle for the Copa Paulino Alcantara crown is slated on May 23.
Seven teams are listed to compete in the tournament that will serve as the curtain raiser to the PFL competition.
Defending champions Kaya FC-Iloilo and the returning Maharlika Manila FC will start the hostilities as the tourney's opening match, to be followed by the fixture between United City FC and Azkals Development Team.
Dynamic Herb Cebu FC, Stallion Laguna FC, and Mendiola FC 1991 are the other squads to participate in the much-anticipated tournament,
The Philippine Football Federation National Training Centre in Carmona, Cavite will serve as venue where games will be held.
The tournament named after the famed Filipino football legend will also observe a closed-circuit format, and will implement a "stop and go" scenario in case of an escalation of alert level in Cavite.
"We look forward to the start of the cup which will reignite the domestic football scene, and we also anticipate for the clubs to host their home matches in their respective venues eventually," said PFL commissioner Coco Torre.
