Undermanned Maharlika FC rose from the ashes and stunned Mendiola FC with a 2-1 come-from-behind win in the Copa Paulino Alcantara 2022 on Monday at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.

A pair of second half goals from brothers Jean and Miggy Clarino lifted Maharlika to its first victory of the season, giving themselves three full points to improve to a 1-1 win-loss card.

It was a satisfying win for the newcomer team, which struggled midway into the match after losing MJ Libre due to two yellow cards in the 42nd mark.

“Actually, everyone in attendance saw that we had a hard time to start the game. But we just focused on ourselves individually,” Jean said after the match.

“We decided to give it all our best and it gave us the two goals that we needed.”

The Kim Chul-Soo-mentored side saw itself in early trouble after losing veteran defender David Basa due to an injury in the opening eight-minute mark of the game.

Problems even compounded as Mendiola capitalized on Maharlika’s manpower crisis, allowing skipper Jim Flores to hammer a thunderous strike inside the box to gain the lead before the halftime whistle.

Things, however, turned around in the 50th minute when the substituting Jean skied a header off Charlie Beaton’s corner kick to equalize the game at 1-1.

It was the other Clarino who completed the upset for Maharlika as he nailed a smooth runner off another right wing pass from Beaton in the 77th minute.

Maharlika will seek to extend its momentum when it collides with reigning PFL champion United City FC in its next game on Thursday at the same Carmona venue.
