Tough task awaits United City FC after landing on Group G of the AFC Champions League in March.
UCFC, the reigning Philippine Football League (PFL) champion, will be battling Melbourne City FC of Australia, BG Pathum United of Thailand and Joennam Dragons of South Korea in the preliminaries of Asia’s most prestigious club tourney.
The Filipino side will be marching without naturalized striker Bienvenido Marañon, but stars like Stephan Schrock, Hikaru Minegishi, Mike Ott, Justine Baas and Jung Da-hwon will be around to carry the cudgels in their second straight continental championship.
Marañon is no longer with the team after expressing his intention to chase “tougher challenges” in top-flight tourneys abroad.
He has yet to announce his next destination.
Meanwhile, two-time Copa Paulino Alcantara titlist Kaya FC will also have a tough time advancing to the next phase.
Kaya FC has to prevail against an Australian side in the preliminaries before facing Changchun Yatai FC of China in the playoff to punch a slot in Group H of the tournament proper.
There, they will clash with two-time AFC Champions League winner Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC of South Korea, Yokohama F. Marinos of Japan and Hoang Anh Gia Lai FC of Vietnam.
